Journey of a fibre network

From Cape Town to Johannesburg

Our network utilises 2 redundant pathways: 1 via FibreCo (along the N1 to Johannesburg) and another via the Northern Cape. Both ensure resiliency and speed.

International

Our network breaks out via Teraco Cape Town (or at Internet Solutions Cape Town as a failover). Primarily, we use the undersea cable, WACS (The West Africa Cable System). In the same way, we rely on the EASSY (The Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System) as a failover. Data travels and terminates at LHX (Equinix Harbour Exchange) in the UK.

London Internet Exchange (LINX)

We have connectivity to LINX in order for us to peer with major content providers without a presence here in South Africa, including (but not limited to): Apple, Blizzard Entertainment, Amazon and Zenlayer. Only 1 hop into the exchange and onto the content provider’s network ensures us lower latency, faster speeds and greater resiliency. Nearly all of the major overseas providers peer at LINX, enabling us to leverage its network here in South Africa.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is peering?

Peering is a process by which 2 Internet networks connect and exchange traffic. This process allows them to directly hand off traffic between their customers (without having to pay a 3rd party to carry that traffic for them). We peer at both NapAfrica exchanges (in Cape Town and Johannesburg), as well as overseas at the London Internet Exchange.

  • What is latency?

In terms of networks, latency (usually measured in milliseconds as a round-trip delay) measures the time it takes for data to get to its destination. Simply put, it’s the time taken for information to get to its destination and back again. Why is this important? Because a computer that uses a TCP/IP network sends a limited amount of data to its destination and then waits for an acknowledgement to come back before sending more.

    • The time it takes for data to get anywhere from Cape Town to within Cape Town =  0-5 ms (ping* news24.com)
    • From Cape Town to Johannesburg = 20-25 ms (ping* google.co.za)
    • From Cape Town to London = 140-145 ms (ping* telegraph.co.uk)

*Ping = used to test reachability

  • What is shaping?

Shaping is a bandwidth management technique used on computer networks which delays some or all programs and their protocols to bring them into compliance with a desired traffic profile. We don’t shape at all because we believe in an open Internet society with no tampering to traffic by the Internet Service Provider (ISP).

  • What is throttling?

Bandwidth throttling is the international slowing down or speeding up of an Internet service by an ISP. It’s a reactive measure employed in communication networks to regulate network traffic and minimise bandwidth congestion. We don’t throttle bandwidth. Instead, we ensure our network is upgraded at all times and has sufficient capacity above monthly traffic peaks, i.e. we promise to never slow you down!

  • What about FUP?

We have no Fair Usage Policy. In fact, we encourage you to use as much data as you like! Uncapped is truly uncapped on our network.

  • Our network equipment vendors

We aren’t locked into a specific network equipment vendor. This is because we prefer to be agnostic and change with the times. We use primarily Cisco, Dell, Edge-core and Mikrotik. We’re agile enough to change hardware without long vendor timelines and will always upgrade ports to the latest standards.

  • Our network providers
    • Internect (our own world-class active fibre network)
    • Octotel
    • Frogfoot
    • Openserve

This allows us to provide our customers with the best service possible, no matter where you’re located.

  • Why we provide managed routers
    • We can help support your issues, such as changing the Wifi password.
    • We keep the router up-to-date for security reasons.
    • We perform tests, such as throughput, latency and traceroutes, all without you needing to know what these mean or how to perform them yourselves.
    • Our staff are highly trained in the software that runs on the router. There are 100s of different brands/software out there. Rather chat to our staff for precise, excellent support.
